Afra Kane "Could We Be Whole" (Itaalia) • Jazzkaar 2024
Afra Kane is a young singer, composer and producer whose sensitive style and diverse cultural background captivate music lovers around the world. She is the winner of the Montreux Jazz Talent Awards (2019) and a nominee for the Swiss Live Talents Awards (2022). In Afra Kane’s music, neo-soul (Erykah Badu, D’Angelo) intersects with jazz, pop and classical music. Trained as a classical pianist, she has also performed piano concertos by Mozart, Saint-Saëns and Gershwin. As a vocalist she has shared the stage with John McLaughlin and Snarky Puppy.
Afra Kane often touches on personal pain points in her songs. Singing about hypersensitivity, depression and self-forgiveness, she tries to break taboos. Kane’s debut album Hypersensitive (2022) received praise from critics and paved the way for concerts in Bolivia, Peru, Spain, the UK, Germany, China and the United States. At Jazzkaar she will present her latest album Could We Be Whole (March 2024, Warner Music International).
Although Afra Kane addresses sensitive topics in her music, her musical language is easily accessible, direct and inviting. The singer’s deep-toned voice can also sound pleasantly mellow when needed. However, perhaps the greatest strength of Afra Kane’s music lies in the diversity of her compositions: simple pop melodies alternate with gospel-like harmonies and claps, while soulful vocal harmonies blend with requiem melodies inspired by classical music. The young composer skillfully weaves together her musical influences, creating a fresh and cohesive sound.
