Tafenau–Kass–Tammearu • Jazzkaar 2024
Ramuel Tafenau, Peedu Kass and Tobias Tammearu have already proven themselves as composers and instrumentalists in the Estonian jazz scene. The freshly formed trio’s collaborative work was born in a creative camp in Tabasalu. Their improvisational method is built on groove-based rhythms combined with tonal and modal harmonies. The audience at Jazzkaar will be the first to hear fresh creations of this new line-up.
The trio’s distinctive tone is what puts the unique stamp on their collectively created music. Every time they meet, they record hours of new music, followed by refinement, selection of the favourite parts, transcription and further development of the best ideas.
Alongside his own quartet and quintet, Ramuel Tafenau, a bright young drummer and talented composer of the younger generation, is a sought-after musician in many ensemble settings. He has performed on jazz stages in Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Germany and Croatia.
Peedu Kass’ educational journey has taken him through several universities – the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki. As a bassist and composer he has created music for symphony orchestras, short films and numerous jazz ensembles. He has been recognised at the Estonian Jazz Awards with Composer of the Year as well as Ensemble of the Year for his work with Peedu Kass Momentum.
Saxophonist Tobias Tammearu, who has received music education at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, has composed music for his own ensembles as well as several Estonian theatres. He has collaborated with the artist Nublu and is involved in groups such as See Pole See Trio, New Wind Jazz Orchestra and Angus.
