RESIDENT: BIANCA RANTALA. INDIE NIGHT ft. ORIGINAL STANDARDS ft. METSÄKYLÄ/ UOTILA/ ÅMAN

Wednesday, 27 August 9 p.m. at Philly Joe's Jazz Club

The Philly Joe’s Summer Residency programme provides a platform for talented young Estonian artists on the jazz scene! New ensembles, colourful programs and the opportunity to hear jazz and music with its influences from a new perspective on every concert evening - all this is offered by selected artists, week after week throughout the summer.

August's resident is singer-composer Bianca Rantala who will be performing with different projects and collaborators every week. The resident can be heard on Wednesdays throughout the month (06.08, 13.08, 20.08 ja 27.08).

“Original Standards”

Singer-composer Bianca Rantala will take the stage, accompanied by Finnish guitar virtuoso Jonas Metsäkylä, one of Sweden's most sought-after double bass players Johnny Åman, and legendary Finnish drummer and pianist Jukkis Uotila.

This quartet connects different generations, countries, and musical worlds. The performance will feature Bianca Rantala's unique and emotionally charged original works and a selection of fresh-sounding jazz standards that take on new life in the dynamic between these four musicians.

Bianca Rantala is an Estonian-Finnish composer, conductor, and singer from Võru, whose work connects the worlds of contemporary jazz and art music. At the 2025 Estonian Jazz Awards, she was awarded the title of Composer of the Year. Rantala is also the winner of the Nordic Composer Contest 2023.

Jonas Metsäkylä is a Finnish guitarist who is active in the Parisian jazz scene and brings a unique and virtuoso sound to the ensemble.

Johnny Åman is one of Sweden's most respected double bass players, having played with names such as Jerry Bergonzi, Dave Liebman and George Garzone.

Jukkis Uotila – a true Finnish jazz legend, an internationally renowned drummer, pianist and pedagogue. As the first jazz professor in the Nordic countries (at the Sibelius Academy), he has shaped a whole generation of European jazz talents. He has played with the top names in the music world, including Chet Baker, McCoy Tyner and Maria Schneider.

Come and be part of a rare musical encounter, where depth, spontaneity and brilliance are shared!
