Tom Sochas Trio - Facing North (UK/ US/ FR)
Saturday, February 7, 8 p.m. at Philly Joe's Jazz Club
Franco-American pianist Tom Sochas and his trio, currently touring across Europe, return to Philly Joe’s performing compositions inspired by the mountains from their latest album, Facing North — work composed in the Arctic Circle on a small island off the coast of Norway. With songs such as Rongbuk, named after the fastest melting glacier in the world and Edelweiss, the prized queen of mountain flowers - expessing vivid imagery through theme and improvisation make this album particularly cinematic. The setlist will also include older tracks and selected jazz standards.
Expect a blend of delicate contrapuntal melodies, expansive Scandinavian soundscapes, and hard-hitting grooves.
Tom Sochas is a Franco-American pianist born and raised in Paris, France and Nairobi, Kenya. Tom moved to London in 2011 to study and pursue his artistic career. Tom’s love of lyrical and melodic music, post-bop and western classical music has led him to developing a unique sound, itself materialising into his first solo EP, You could hear the bird sing. Following its success Tom Sochas released his debut trio album The Sorcerer on Khumbu Records in April 2022. Tom and the trio have had the pleasure of touring this record and performing to sold-out audiences in some of Europe’s greatest jazz clubs including Ronnie Scott’s in London, Birdland in Hamburg, Sunset Sunside in Paris, Philly Joe’s in Tallinn, Sala Clamores in Madrid, The Jazz Bar in Edinburgh and Milano Jazz Club in Barcelona amongst others. His sophomore album Facing North is now out on Khumbu Records.
