TOHI Gin Presents: Aleksander Paal. Recalibration, vol. 3: Asymmetric Visibility
TOHI GIN PRESENTS: ALEKSANDER PAAL. RECALIBRATION, vol.2: ASYMETRIC VISIBILITY
Thursday, May 20, 8 p.m. at Philly Joe's Jazz Club
Recalibration is an ongoing series dedicated to the development of new material and the refinement of musical language within the post-bop tradition. It provides a focused framework for compositional work, allowing ideas to mature through repeated performance.
Vol. 3 brings together a sextet built around two flutes, alongside piano, guitar, bass, and drums. The program consists of original compositions that favor a more transparent ensemble sound, where texture and balance are carefully shaped. Lines move between foreground and background, allowing the music to breathe without relying on weight or density.
The title “Asymmetric Visibility” refers to contexts in which not everything is equally heard or revealed, and where the element that stands out is not always what matters the most. In a musical setting, this leads to a subtle shift in attention: certain lines remain partially exposed, yet the more modest sounds continue to guide the music. The ensemble becomes a space in which not everything is brought forward equally, allowing what is less apparent to quietly influence how the music unfolds.
Line-up:
Aleksander Paal – flute, saxophones
Markus Eermann – flute, tenor saxophone
Joel Remmel – piano
Jaan Jaanson – guitar
Heikko Remmel – double bass
