FOLK NIGHT: "HUMIN"ALBUM RELEASE CONCERT

Thursday,  December 11, 8 p.m. at Philly Joe's Jazz Club

Humin is an Estonian folk music ensemble that came together in 2020 to compose original works. Humin means a flat, monotonous dark humming, a good example is the hum of the forest, or the low steady continuous buzzing of a bee. In music, this word could be used, for example, as a synonym for bourdon. According to the band members, “humin” became familiar because their music is diverse, but sometimes you can still hear a hum. Their wish is for this word to spread more in Estonia for its beauty and meaning.

Humin's music is a mix of folk, pop and jazz, the songs talk about life itself and the musicians' personal experiences. In 2023, the group grew its musical baggage in Scotland, bringing a little Scottish flavor to their songs. At the 2024 and 2025 Mooste Elohelü competition concerts, Humin won the award for the best arrangement of a mandatory song.

In August 2025, the band's self-titled debut album “Humin” was released. A beautifully thoughtful piece of work now asks you to allow yourself to lose yourself in your thoughts, feel and hum along.

The album consists of 12 songs that were born in very different times and places. The first songs on the album are from 2020 while the recording process began in the fall of 2023 in Glasgow, where the duo collaborated with Bob Whitney and Tom W. Greene who helped record the songs “Rähn”, “Kaisukaru laul”, “Kuri pilk” and “Aja mekel”. The recording and final finishing of the album continued in April 2025 in Viljandi, at Myra Studio with Johannes Ahun. Humin’s work speaks of loneliness, waiting and contemplation reflecting a wide spectrum of emotions, from melancholy to frustration.

The release of the album has been supported by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia. In addition to the songs on the album, the concert will also feature arrangements of Estonian folk song melodies.
