BIG BAND DAY: New Wind Jazz Orchestra
Monday, March 23, 8 p.m. at Philly Joe's Jazz Club
The New Wind Jazz Orchestra (NWJO), founded in 2018 under the leadership of Lauri Kadalipp, is a 17-member big band. The repertoire of the collective, which consists of the best Estonian jazz musicians, is demanding and wide-ranging, from classical to contemporary jazz. The jazz orchestra's goals include performing and recording the work of Estonian jazz composers and introducing professional big band repertoire to audiences across Estonia.
The synergy and quality of the NWJO is also evidenced by the fact that in 2023 it was awarded the title of Jazz Ensemble of the Year at the Estonian Jazz Awards.
During its eight years of operation, the NWJO has also shared the stage with well-known performers from around the world, such as Wolf Kershcek, who conducts leading jazz orchestras in Germany, Nigerian-British vocalist Ola Onabule, and drummer John Riley, who is part of the world-famous American big band The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Of course, they have collaborated with many Estonian top musicians, such as saxophonist Raul Sööt, pianist Kristjan Randalu, the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, as well as renowned soloists such as Anett, Alika and Vaiko Eplik.
In collaboration with composer and pianist Kristjan Randalu, one of the most widely known Estonian jazz musicians in the world, NWJO released its debut album in the fall of 2022. The nine-song collection “Sisu” includes new big band arrangements of original works created by Randalu, as well as arrangements of well-known Estonian songs. The album features Wolf Kerschek (Germany) as conductor, Ingrid Jensen (Canada) on trumpet and Ben Monder (USA) on guitar.
