MARO (Portugal) • Jazzkaar 2024
Vocalist and songwriter MARO burst into the consciousness of music lovers like a rocket in 2022, representing her home country Portugal at Eurovision with the song saudade, saudade. This indie-pop track inspired by folk music has been remixed by NOËP. MARO’s talent is highly appreciated by Jacob Collier, with whom she has created a song called Lua. MARO’s music is intimate, with dreamlike soundscapes and superb arrangements. Most of her songs are in Portuguese – a language seemingly made for singing and perfectly suited to MARO’s voice.
Hailing from Lisbon, Mariana Secca aka MARO has already achieved a lot in the music industry: five studio albums and one EP, collaboration with the aforementioned Jacob Collier on his album Djesse Vol. 2, sold-out concerts in Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Mexico and the USA, as well as a successful performance at Eurovision are just some of the singer and multi-instrumentalist’s accomplishments in her vibrant career. Secca began learning the piano at the age of 4, wrote her first song at 11, graduated from high school and the conservatory at 17, and furthered her skills at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. She has collaborated with Salvador Sobral, Brazilian legend Milton Nascimento and several other artists.
The singer’s latest album, titled hortelã, was released in April of last year under the SECCA Records label. Hortelã is a beautiful acoustic LP featuring guitarists Dariío Barroso and Pau Figures. The masterfully played and nuanced guitars are positioned to the left and right, leaving space in the middle for MARO’s unique and beautiful vocals that are profound, yearning, controlled and confident.
During her European tour in April, the singer will perform in ten countries. We are delighted that Estonian music fans will also have the opportunity to enjoy MARO’s captivating voice and soulful songs.
