SpringFolkFunkJazz: Keelepeksjad + Duo Cätlin & Marko Mägi
SPRINGFOLKFUNKJAZZ: KEELEPEKSJAD + DUO CÄTLIN & MARKO MÄGI
Friday, May 15, 8 p.m. at Philly Joe's Jazz Club
Spring is in full bloom and the birds are chirping to invite you to the SpringFolkFunkJazz festival at Philly Joe’s Jazz Club!
Much of traditional music is meant for dancing, and Keelepeksjad presents precisely this - the danceable and rhythmic part of both Estonian and other nations’ folk music. The keywords are electricity, improvisation, guitars and heat, and all this while respecting and keeping the traditional source material in focus. Guitarists Jaak Sooäär and Marek Talts have the opportunity to perform brisk melodies polyphonically and in many voices, taking even some well-known polka pieces to completely new trajectories. Henno Kelp grooves on the bass guitar with modern rock sounds, and Karl-Juhan Laanesaar creates an energetic rhythmic texture.
The concert will feature songs from the album "Kalev tuli koju", presented at the Spring Jazzkaar festival - you’ll hear both arrangements of Estonian folk dances and Jaak Sooäär's work, which is directly influenced by instrumental Estonian folk songs. The album earned Keelepeksjad the title of New Folk Artist of the Year at the Estonian Folk Music Awards Gala Etnokulp 2025.
"It was a pleasure to watch how their chemistry allowed them to hypnotize the audience for a long time and bring them along on an immersive soundscape experience." - Jakob Lille
The first to heat up the party will be Duo Cätlin & Marko Mägi, who mainly play Estonian folk music. Their performance combines archaic songs for the bagpipe and Jew’s harp with modern improvisations on the saxophone. The synergistic duo manages to create a special bond with their audience, offering them not only a musical experience but also knowledge of the Estonian bagpipe and Jew’s harp tradition, and the crowd will surely get to sing along at least one folk song!
