ARTIS BORISS QUINTET

Wednesday, May 27, 8 p.m. at Philly Joe's Jazz Club

The Artis Boriss Quintet brings together longtime musical collaborators and close friends, united by a shared artistic vision and deep mutual understanding. This ensemble presents a fresh and dynamic program centered on Artis’ newly composed works, seamlessly blending post-bop, swing, funk, and Latin influences. Rooted in tradition yet driven by contemporary expression, the music reflects both technical mastery and a spirit of exploration.

Artis Boriss is a jazz pianist, keyboardist, and producer originally from Riga, Latvia. With a strong foundation in classical and jazz piano from an early age, he graduated from the Riga Cathedral Choir School's jazz department before continuing his studies at the Estonian Academy of Music. Now based in Tallinn, Artis is an active presence in both the Estonian and Latvian music scenes. He works as a producer and performing artist, collaborating with a wide range of notable acts.

Marten Männa is a drummer and multi-instrumentalist who is taking the Estonian music scene by storm. While studying at the Tallinn Music and Ballet School, he won first place at both the prestigious Round Table Soloist Competition and the Uno Naissoo Composition Competition. Marten's playing and creations are characterized by boundless energy, a sharp ear, flowing creativity and, of course, a steady hand.

Kris Denn (aka Kristen Kütner) is a guitarist and producer based in Tallinn, who is best known for the bands Lexsoul Dancemachine and Põhja Konn. Kris Denn is inspired by various musical genres and believes that there is something useful to learn from every style. His playing style is characterized by a driving rhythm and beautiful melodies, which can also be heard on his debut album "Colors".

Allan Kaljaste is an emerging jazz saxophonist of the younger generation of Estonians. Kaljaste has played in groups such as New Wind Jazz Orchestra, 2 Quick Start, Jason Hunter Baltic Quartet and represented Estonia in the international Euroradio Jazz Orchestra. In 2020 he released his debut album “Smoky Bar” with the Allan Kaljaste Smooth Group. Today, Kaljaste's creative focus has shifted towards post-bop jazz and his playing is characterized by clear melodic thinking, expressive phrasing and a technically solid altissimo register.

Joosep Talumaa is an Estonian bass guitarist whose musical journey began as a guitarist, but over the past decade he has devoted himself entirely to bass. He has played with many pop and rhythm music artists, participated in television projects and is a sought-after musician in dance and party bands. Talumaa is also a member of the group Flow Rea, with whom he has released the album “Pulse”. Joosep’s playing is characterized by a deep groove and precise “pocket”, while he also leaves room for freedom and spontaneity.

Allan Kaljaste - saxophone

Marten Männa - drums

Kristen Kütner - guitar
