“MORE SILENCE” Melvin/Lee/Hass (USA-DK)
Thursday, April 24, 8 p.m. at Philly Joe's Jazz Club
A new and exciting trio consisting of saxophonist Thomas Hass, guitarist Søren Lee and drummer Brian Melvin came to life during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2023. The music is characterized by Søren Lee's atmospheric and ethereal guitar sounds, which create a foundation for Thomas Hass's lyrical tones, and accompanied by Brian Melvin's colorful and wide-ranging meditative drumming. The repertoire consists of original compositions, open improvisations, carefully selected standards, and compositions by artists such as John Coltrane. It's an open and lyrical universe with roots in both Scandinavian and American jazz.
The trio recorded in the MillFactory Studio, Copenhagen in February 2024, and is set to release its first album “MORE SILENCE” in early 2025. The first single introducing the album, "Our Daily Bread" was released in March 2025.
Brian Melvin is an american drummer and has, among other, played and recorded 6 records with the great late bassist Jaco Pastorius. His trio’s recording “Standards Zone” was the number one jazz album for 13 weeks. He has also played and recorded with many other jazz and rock legends such as Joe Henderson, John Scofield, Mike Stern, Joe Lovano, Bob Weir (Grateful Dead) and Beatle jazz and Rashied Ali.
Søren Lee has recorded and played with jazz legends such as the late bassist Ray Brown, Jim Hall, Brad Mehldau, Adam Nussbaum. Søren has made a name for himself on the international jazz scene through his highly acclaimed trio recordings (Soren Lee Diversity Trio, Hope, Tranesformation, and many more).
Thomas Hass is one of Scandinavia's prominent saxophonists who has shaped Danish jazz for decades. He has performed with renowned musicians such as Rakalam Bob Moses, Tomasz Stanko, Kenny Werner, Jerry Bergonzi, Joe Lovano, and Carsten Dahl. Hass has received awards and nominations for his artistic work and has released 17 albums as a leader or co-leader, primarily in the acoustic jazz quartet format featuring some of Scandinavia's leading jazz artists. Hass has also ventured into electronic jazz music, releasing two albums with The Society.
