#1 Concert of the Ukrainian and Estonian military orchestra's jazz ensembles
#1 CONCERT OF THE UKRAINIAN AND ESTONIAN MILITARY ORCHESTRA'S JAZZ ENSEMBLES
Thursday, April 16, 6 p.m. at Philly Joe's Jazz Club
The jazz ensembles of the Ukrainian and Estonian military orchestra will give two spectacular concerts on one night only with special guest Susanna Aleksandra!
The Estonian Military Orchestra Nonett is a formation that combines the flexibility of a small ensemble and the power of a big band. The jazz ensemble, consisting of 3 saxophones, 2 trumpets, a trombone and a rhythm section, plays mainly swing music from the golden 60s. Their role models are the larger chamber ensembles of Miles Davis and Gerry Mulligan. The ensemble’s repertoire includes classics from the hard bop and cool jazz eras.
The Jazz Ensemble of the Ukrainian Navy Orchestra is part of the Center of Military Musical Art of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, based in Odessa. The ensemble continues a tradition that began in 1993 in Sevastopol, where the Navy orchestra was first formed. After the occupation of Crimea in 2014, part of the musicians left the peninsula and resumed service in Odessa.
The orchestra and its jazz ensemble perform a wide repertoire that includes jazz standards, contemporary arrangements, and original interpretations alongside military and ceremonial music. They represent the Ukrainian Navy at official events, state visits, and international appearances. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, the musicians have taken on a dual role: they perform for civilians and service members to support morale, including concerts near the front line. Some members of the ensemble also serve in combat units. The musicians develop programs for both wartime and peacetime stages. They rehearse in freezing conditions, and continue working despite constant danger. For the concert evening in Estonia, the ensemble created a separate program and prepared it under these conditions.
The concert will be held in collaboration with the brilliant Estonian jazz vocalist Susanna Aleksandra.
