NOBE presents: Lady Blackbird (USA) • Jõulujazz 2024
Billie Holiday, Gladys Knight, Tina Turner and Chaka Khan are just a few of the influences on Los Angeles-based musician Marley Munroe, known by her stage name Lady Blackbird. With her bold, unique and powerful voice, she will showcase her fresh and highly anticipated album Slang Spirituals at the Nobel Hall during Christmas Jazz.
In 2020, Munroe released a minimalist cover of Nina Simone’s song Blackbird, which received widespread attention in the U.S. The arrangement, featuring only double bass and piano, combined with Munroe’s hauntingly powerful vocals, brought Simone’s 1963 song into a fresh, contemporary light. Capitalising on the success of this first hit, Munroe adopted the stage name Lady Blackbird and began intensive work on her debut album. Black Acid Soul was released in 2021, garnering widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences. According to The Guardian, Lady Blackbird’s powerful voice and extraordinary songs burn deep into the listener. This success was followed by sold-out European tours, performances on jazz star Gregory Porter’s tour and a concert at the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
