III: ELTS AND MAHLER’S THIRD
PRE-CONCERT at 18:00 (admission to the pre-concert is free with a ticket to the symphony concert at 7 p.m.)
PROGRAMME
Gustav Mahler
Symphony No. 3 D minor
PERFORMERS
SANDRA LAAGUS soprano, EAMT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, ERSO, conductor OLARI ELTS
According to the composer, Gustav Mahler’s grandiose Symphony No. 3 reflects the harmony of the universe. The concept of the work was influenced by the philosophies of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, with significant impulses drawn from the poetic imagery of the creation of the world found in the works of Mahler’s close friend, Siegfried Lipiner. Based on the idea that a symphony is a “model of the world”, Mahler reflects the pantheistic development of nature in all its beauty and contrasts, moving from primordial chaos to cosmic catharsis. To perform this magnificent musical epic, a massive orchestra, boys' and women's choirs, and an alto soloist are required. To create a spatial soundscape, the composer also utilizes instruments performing off-stage. ERSO is led by Chief Conductor Olari Elts.
